As mediators, we rely on our mediation process. However, more and more, we are facing new and different challenges that require us to pivot. It can be uncomfortable, even stressful, to try new techniques. As professionals, we overcome those feelings in order to help our clients turn their roadblocks into pathways for their futures. By continually updating our strategies, knowledge and techniques, we advance our mediation movement and help families find resolutions that are healing and life changing.
This year we are combining the Fall and Winter Symposium into one event: The NYSCDM Mediation Symposium. We are offering two days of curated sessions with deep dives and some more breathing space throughout the day. More time to process information, enjoy a cup of coffee, take a phone call or two, answer a few emails, etc. All sessions will be recorded, so you can attend live, on demand or a combination of the two.

The Curious Things that Happen on the Road to Resolution
If mediation were a road trip, what tools would be in your toolkit (and what songs would be on your playlist)?? We know that the road to resolution involves bumps, detours and sometimes gaping potholes – and we need to meaningfully navigate this obstacle course!
Defensive behaviors can be huge obstacles to productive dialogue. When they show up, our dominant mediation model urges us to keep moving forward – because we are great problem-solvers. If we’re being honest, this approach often leads to more resistance. Can curiosity lead us to the Superpower Repair Shop that will get us back on the Road to Resolution?
In this workshop we will learn to notice and respond to the defensive conflict behaviors that get in the way of productive discussion. We will build on strategies to bring the power of curiosity to the moment AND be productive! The neuroscience tells us that curiosity helps defuse defensiveness and promote openness. The goal of the workshop is to help us all be more productive and natural in conflict – giving our "repair shop-fixer" orientation a break and becoming truly Curious Mediators.
